HDL and LDL carry cholesterol in the blood and have different roles. This illustration from the Healthsphere Clinic Facebook page introduces the two values commonly seen in blood test results.
HDL is often called “good” cholesterol and helps carry cholesterol back to the liver. LDL is often called “bad” cholesterol because excess LDL can contribute to fatty deposits in artery walls.
Heart health assessment also considers age, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and family history. Cholesterol targets can therefore differ between individuals.
Bring previous results and your medication list to your clinician to discuss a suitable care and follow-up plan. Do not change or stop medication based on one result alone.
